Dr. JP Hamel

My name is Dr. JP Hamel. I have been practing here in Turlock since 2002. I was born the third of four children to Paul and JoAnn Hamel in Holyoke, MA. My family and I moved to California in the late 1970s. After a brief stay in the East Bay Area, we settled in Merced.

I graduated from Merced High School in 1993 and was part of Merced High's '93 State champion track team. During high school I received Virginia Smith Memorial Scholarship, Bloss Memorial Scholarship, and World Color Press, Rosswell Messing, Jr. Four-Year Scholarship. I accepted these scholarships and enrolled at UC Davis where I graduated in '97 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition Science. I took a year off from school to work at a local grocery store and as a medical, optometry, and dental school exam (MCAT, DAT, and OAT) teacher and tutor at Kaplan in Fresno. In '98, I enrolled in Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, OR working as an optics lab assistant and Kaplan tutor for the Portland site in my free time. I graduated in May of 2002 after my thesis "Soft Toric Lens Fitting Adjustment Software" was written. My thesis involved the development of a new mathematical formula designed to accurately assess and correct for the rotation common in soft contact lenses designed for astigmatism.

During my four years at Pacific, I interned at various locations including David Grant Medical Center at Travis AFB in Fairfield where I was able to see military personnel, dependents, retirees, and veterans. I also interned at Eyes of Arizona in Lake Havasu City, a vision and surgery center specializing in cataract extractions. This facility exposed me to the more medical side of vision. Here, I was examining pre and post-op cataract extraction patients, diabetics, and hypertensive patients daily exposing me to everything from cataracts to strokes of the eye to thyroid eye disease to macular degeneration. Lake Havasu was a great experience for my career, but it also was a great place to live, especially if you have a boat and a lot of free time.

In my spare time I enjoy cooking, working out, playing cards, and spending time with my family.

JP Hamel, O D
