Dr. Jay K. Berry

Dr. Jay K. Berry, who is now retired, began practicing Optometry in Turlock in 1966. During that time he saw thousands of patients, including many third generation families. Dr. Berry remains committed to his profession by attending conferences and he has also received certification allowing him to use and prescribe certain medications to treat a variety of eye disorders. He also served the community as the president of Turlock’s Chamber of Commerce and as Chairman for the Chamber of Commerce’s Roundup.

Throughout Dr. Berry’s education he spent time at some of the finest school in the West, including BYU in Utah, Sacramento State, Alaska Methodist, University of Alaska, and UC Berkeley. Dr. Berry achieved his bachelor’s degree and his doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University School of Optometry. While there, he worked as a teaching assistant in the ocular anatomy lab. After graduating in 1962, Dr berry served as an optometrist in the United States Air Force until 1966 and was stationed in Florida for one year and Anchorage Alaska for 3 years. He was in Anchorage at 5:30 p.m. on March 27th 1964 when the infamous Good Friday earthquake hit. Now estimated to be 9.0 on the Richter scale, this is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America.

Not only is Dr. Berry a dedicated optometrist, he is
also involved in many other activities including skiing (a member of the National Ski Patrol for 8 years), softball, and rock climbing. Mostly, he is an avid golfer who has played at over 700 golf courses, with that number increasing yearly. Even though Dr. Berry’s favorite hobby for fun and relaxation is golf, he also plays competitively. Currently he holds three gold medals, two silver and one bronze from the Huntsman Senior world Games held yearly in St. George, Utah. Dr. Berry enjoys traveling to play golf, attend conferences, and just to see the world.

At home in Turlock, with his wife Carol, Dr. Berry also enjoys spending time with his family. They have two sons and one daughter, all married, and five grandchildren. Carol recently retired from her Second grade teaching position at Keyes Elementary School District where she taught for 38 years.
